Puppet making meaning1/27/2024 ![]() ![]() A police officer is unable to help because the only tools at his disposal are a taser, a baton, and pepper spray. In one skit, Intern Kitty gets stuck in a tree. Puppets For Justice formed in 2020 to create content that helps parents talk to children about big topics like police reform. This series goes beyond puppetry’s potential for human self-examination to show that puppetry, as a relationship between human and nonhuman, gives us the chance to examine our relationship with nonhumans–objects, animals, and others. In turn, this series examines how these solidarities change our relationships to ourselves, other humans, human constructs, animals, the environment, and all nonhuman life. My hope for this series on puppetry is to showcase a myriad of shapes and styles-hand puppets, rod puppets, nearly two-dimensional paper mâché forms, wearable cardboard constructions-and the ways in which these puppets, whether representational or abstract, can form solidarities among humans. Even as clearly defined objects, puppets become tools to express human experience and relationships between human and nonhuman. Articulated objects like chairs, drinking glasses, and hats are made to bow, walk, and gesture in human expression. While he is in deep despair, his room and the objects in it begin to come alive, and it is through those interactions with objects that he rediscovers that life is worth living. In it, a washed-up opera singer (played by a human actor) returns to his hotel room. In January 2020, I saw Pùnkitititi! performed at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, directed by Doug Fitch. Likewise, commonplace objects like a scrap of ribbon or bit of cardboard can convey complex emotions through puppetry. Even the most realistic, humanoid puppet can never overcome its thingness: we see its rods, strings, and other tell-tale signs of human-assisted movement. This is an act of solidarity, not with the ideology or ideas behind the monuments, but with the objects themselves as they fall, break, sink, or are covered over with paint of possibilities.Ī puppet is both inherently human-like and other-than-human. When people gather around a statue of Columbus, entwine him with ropes, and pull him down, what is it if not an act of puppetry? It’s a performance between human and nonhuman, and its meaning is greater than the sum of its parts.

Build a saferoom1/27/2024 ![]() High winds aren’t just pummeling a building from the outside: They can also smash out roofs and walls by streaming in via windows, doors, or any other openings, and lift a structure right off its foundation. Single gusts in less intense storms can still pack a heck of a punch. A Category 4 or 5 hurricane boasts winds in excess of 150 miles per hour the most powerful tornadoes, classed as EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, may whirl away at better than 300 miles per hour. (Most of the information in this blogpost comes from FEMA Publication P-320, "Taking Shelter From the Storm: Building a Safe Room for Your Home or Small Business.") A home constructed solely to local building codes is still definitely vulnerable to the devastation of a major windstorm. FEMA’s standards call for safe rooms to resist winds of 250 miles per hour: an “extreme weather event,” to say the least. Under the guidelines of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a safe room is meant to deliver “near-absolute protection in extreme weather events.” Such a room needs to be independent of any surrounding or connected building structure (in the case of an interior or adjacent safe room). Here we’ll take a look at some of the basics of building such a structure and briefly consider other kinds of at-home emergency shelters. If you live in an area prone to such atmospheric disturbances, one option for protecting yourself is installing a safe room: a reinforced, firmly anchored shelter that can shield you from hammering winds and projectile debris. ![]() It’s a stark and shocking illustration of the power these violent storms wield-and the threat they represent. In addition, proper ventilation is a must if you're using your safe room to protect you and yours from hurricanes. You’ve probably seen the pictures, even if you’ve been lucky enough to avoid the experience yourself: sturdy homes reduced to jagged rubble by a monster tornado or hurricane. The shelter's roof must be securely anchored to its walls, the walls to each other, and the walls to the shelter's foundation. According to the Texas Tech University Wind Science and Engineering Research Center, adequate fasteners are important to the shelter's structural performance. The secret to building an effective safe room is to fortify existing walls with plywood (the most economical choice), steel or concrete, and to make sure the whole room is properly fastened together. If timing is critical, you also don't need to venture outside to access the safe room, since you can reach it from inside the house. For example, safe rooms are usually less expensive: A simple lean-to shelter in a basement will cost around $2,000, while a fortified safe room in a new house will add an extra $3,000 to $6,000 to your construction costs. Safe rooms have several advantages over outside shelters. If you'd rather build a safe room inside your house, read on to the next page for some ideas.Ī safe room is a windowless box inside your house where you and your family can escape the danger of wind-borne projectiles during hurricanes or tornadoes. For an idea of what you're up against, consider that a typical two-car garage measures 400 square feet (37.2 square meters). ![]() You'll need even more space than that if you have sick or shut-in relations, as each bedridden person needs 30 square feet (2.8 square meters). Now that we've convinced you to build some sort of hurricane shelter, how large should it be? It depends on the number of people in your household FEMA suggests that your home hurricane shelter building have at least 10 square feet (.93 square meters) of space per person, so a shelter made to house a family of five would need to be at least 50 square feet (4.65 square meters). These shelters are made for "extreme wind events" like tornadoes and hurricanes. Companies that sell storm shelters include Armor Vault of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Steel Storm Shelters, based in Jackson, Tenn. To be built properly, a storm shelter can be designed by an engineer and built on-site by a contractor, or you can have a pre-fabricated unit delivered to your chosen site and assembled there. A stand-alone shelter strong enough to protect against a hurricane's fury could also be made of concrete fortified with reinforcing iron bars (known as rebar), fortified masonry blocks, or insulating concrete forms (foam molds into which concrete is poured, known as ICFs). If you’re breastfeeding, it could be something you’re eating that is causing your baby’s diaper rash. ![]() Causes you might not think aboutĭiaper rash can also be triggered by changes to your baby’s diet like when you introduce solid foods or if you’re baby is taking antibiotics. Other things can trigger symptoms of diaper rash like chafing from friction against diapers and/or tight clothing, prolonged contact with urine and feces and irritation from a new product such as soap, wipe, diaper, detergent or fabric softener. The primary cause is prolonged or increased exposure to wetness to the skin. Babies with sensitive skin are more prone to it. It’s most common in babies 6-12 months of age. Mike dozer plumber1/27/2024 ![]() With that said, i would not worry much about whether the winch spool needs to be a cylinder spool or a motor spool. It will be like some sort of one way clutch. If it has a load holding brake (id wager a lot that a crane winch has an incredible brake) it is probably a friction style that rubs the interior of the cross tube inside the cable drum and the motor shaft runs through the center. I am guessing its full of stacked planetaries and will be very slow but a slow winch is faster than a no winch. So thats why the small rating, its probably at a 4x safety factor or higher. Okay, i see by images tab its a whopper of a winch meant for overhead lifting on carry decks and cranes. Can you post more pics of this winch and or make and model? Is it mechanical and automatic? Or is it hydraulic and additional control mechanism?Ī thousand pound winch that only pulls 12,500 seems odd to me. So we kinda need to know more about the brake. The last detail is whether the work ports of the center position need to be "cylinder spools" or "motor spools". PB Only has continuity to the inlet port when the spool is centered. The exhaust port will also have opposing connection to the work ports but the power beyond port will NOT have connection to the work ports at any time. Stroke the opposite way and it must come out only from the other work port. Now when you stroke the spool 1 way and blow into the inlet it should come out only one of the work ports. It needs to spring itself back to that center position when you let off from either direction, exactly like a 3 way momentary toggle switch. If it blows out the work ports at rest, also no-go. ![]() Either way air should blow through with no valve moved. Or out the power beyond port if its configured for beyond.x there is usually a plug that converts them and yours may not be installed. That means at rest you can blow air into the inlet and it will blow out the exhaust only. Next up, It needs an open center configuration. 2500 psi on the back takes 2500 more psi on the front before it opens. Since differential poppets only measure pressure difference from two chambers and not absolute pressure, the dont know 2500 from 5000. ![]() The PB part makes it so no relief valve ever has high pressure on the back side. This will make it safe to run the two valves in series no matter what you do with the levers simultaneously. It looks to have 3 body ports, which is inlet, exhaust and power beyond. This will give you independant relief valves in each back. Take it apart and verify there is a poppet and spring setup underneath. It looks to have an adjustable internal relief valve. To make matters worse, the feather-light propellers fall outside of the main body of the drone when you handle it, making it feel like you’re going to snap one off at any moment.
